Science-fact:
Multi-Colored Corn: Real or fake?

Believe it or not, this is actually real. Not a clever use of photoshop and certainly not a glass figurine. Instead, a man named Greg Schoen from ‘The Seeds of Trust” actually grew this beautiful ear of corn in his garden, through the conventional method of planting seeds.

Interestingly, besides being quite beautiful to look at, this is the hallmark of genetically modified foods, while also providing research into the annals of genetic research, as each kernel seen here is actually a mix of different corn plants, each having a unique mix of genes inherited from its ancestors

You can read more about the groundbreaking research here:

FYI: During the 1700’s, carrots were purple instead of their vibrant orange color of modern times.

Interesting

Although this picture was taken already in 1987, it never fails to impress. Depicted is the Polish heart surgeon Dr. Zbigniew Religa during a 23-hour operation, while he keeps watch on a monitor tracking the vital signs of a heart-transplant patient. His assistent is asleep in the corner.

The photographer, James L. Stanfield, was looking for the perfect shot to portray not only a extraordinary medical moment, but also the many problems associated with a free health-care system Poland had at the time.

Religa later became the Polish Minister of Health. He died in 2009 of lung cancer as he, ironically, was a lifetime smoker.

1. The Properties of Amino Acids are:

A)     They contain both a Carboxyl Group (COOH) and an Amino Group (NH2).

B)      It is easily ionized therefore the amino group becomes negatively charged and the carboxyl group becomes negatively charged making it dipolar such that it now becomes a zwitterions

C)      An energy store in animals because of its rich source of carbon-carbon bonds which can be oxidized to produce ATP

D)     They are the building blocks of proteins and there are 20 that are generally found in protein in living systems

Does One Really Know What Is Arsenic Poisoning??? Lets Learn More…

Image

While doing some research I came across this very interesting article entitled “Arsenic Poisoning”, discussant Michael S. Gorby, M.D, Albuquerque. This article may seem a bit miss leading at first; I actually thought this article was based on two patients who had experienced arsenic poisoning. A 17 years old woman whom attempted suicide by ingesting arsenic poisoning trioxide containing rodenticide and 64 year old man who suffered with chronic arsenic poisoning who was admitted several times in hospitals for various complications.

However, this article instead discussed the chemistry of the element Arsenic, the sources of arsenic poisoning: it’s natural, industrial and administered sources. Also the biochemistry and toxicity of arsenic, the effects of arsenic poisoning whether it is acute or chronic and the treatment of arsenic poisoning were discussed.

So What is Arsenic Poisoning???

Imagehttp://sp.life123.com/bm.pix/arsenic.s600x600.jpg

Arsenic is a member of the nitrogen family or group 5 of the periodic table of the elements. It has an atomic number 33 with an atomic weight of 74.9 and is classified as a transition element or metalloid. Arsenic is a natural element found in soil and minerals. Arsenic compounds are used to preserve wood, as pesticides, and in some industries. Arsenic can get into air, water, and the ground from wind-blown dust. It may also get into water from runoff.

You may be exposed to arsenic by:

  • Taking in small amounts in food, water or air
  • Breathing sawdust or burning smoke from arsenic-treated wood
  • Living in an area with high levels of arsenic in rock
  • Working in a job where arsenic is made or used

Exposure to arsenic can cause many health problems. Being exposed to low levels for a long time can change the color of your skin. It can cause corns and small warts. Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause death.

What enzyme do cows have that allows them to digest cellulose?

Image

ANSWER…

Image

Humans only possess alpha amylase, which can’t break down cellulose (because it has a beta 1-4 linkage). This is why when we ate grass as children (if you attempted to anyways) it passed straight through your system and out, eventually into the toilet.

WELCOME…My name is Evelyn Noyan…but in the Social World many know me as Sayuki Lyn. I live in the beautiful twin island of Trinidad and Tobago. I attend the University of The West Indies, St Augustine Campus where I am pursing a double Major in Biology and Chemistry. I am pretty much a cool person, who can carry interesting conversations…guessing that’s my out going, out spoken personality…well so I’ve been told. I am Animal Lover who strongly believes that animal cruelty should END. I am very much Interested in the field of Forensic Sciences especially Forensic Pathology…the Human Body is such a Fascinating thing.

I’M A DREAMER!!!

LOVES Music from Post-Hardcore to Metal, Alternative Rock :D Huge Anime Lover….Bleach… Well enough about Me…

So as the creator of this Blog ‘REALM OF BIOCHEMISTRY’ it’s my Duty to speak on the topic of Biochemistry… More Importantly the course Biochemistry 1, better known as BIOL 1362. Honestly, the feedback I received from students of previous years gave me the impression that this course is ‘grim.’ Yes…scarey I know but from attending the lectures and viewing the relevant materials provided online it can seen that the course isn’t that bad…or am I jumping to conclusions??? …Oh well only time will tell. What I do know is that there’s a new Lecturer for this course whose approach towards teaching is completely different in that the course is designed to help the Students not only Pass but also have Fun Learning and Exploring the Fascinating World of Biochemistry. Also Remember One Thing Passing this Course Begins with YOU. There are many Resources at your Finger tips so use them Wisely. I look forward to your Comments, Suggestions and Constructive Criticism.
